Typical large scale duck farm has the number of 2000 duck heads. These ducks are raised for the purpose of laying. The eggs are then incubated to produce balut and penoy, which are one of Filipino’s must loved street food. Balut and penoy business depends heavily on the continuous supply of eggs. Being able to take into account that Filipinos love balut and penoy, the business of duck farm is a sure profit business. Proper management should always be observe, just like any business.
The layer ducks will be producing eggs. For 1 male to 3 female duck ration, the egg production cost will be optimum for daily production consideration. Female ducks will require area, feeds, clean water, and shelter. Same goes to male ducks, which are raised to help the females.
With a ratio of 1600 female ducks and 400 male ducks, the farm can generate 800 to 1000 plus eggs a day. Applying good management and techniques on the farm operation, one can have such productive farm. Care for these bird will make the farm produce more eggs, compared to poorly managed farm.
Focusing on the need of the ducks is essential. Among the primary needs of ducks are:
- Bathing Water Pond. The ducks, being birds fond of bathing on water, need bathing pond. The water is contained on an improvised water pond, possibly made of cement and hollow blocks. It is important for the ducks to cool down on such ponds, and clean their feathers. The water must be replaced when already dirty, since the ducks will not bathe on dirty water pond. Providing a bathing pond increase egg laying and productivity.
- Food. The ducks are nourished with quality feeds, rich in protein and energy giving nutrients. The ducks when properly nourished will give more eggs. The ducks must be feed equally as much as possible. Distribute the feeds in many feeding areas in order for each bird to eat.
- Shelter. The shelter is needed to protect the birds from sun, heat, and rain. The house can be made of concrete or wood posts, and galvanized or coconut nipa roof. The area needs to be well ventilated. The flooring can be filled with rice hull for egg laying.
Collection of eggs involves careful collection of eggs in the shelter. Eggs can be laid anywhere the farm, hence spotting eggs around the area is needed. The eggs can be transported by pale, basket, or available container that can safely handle the eggs.
The eggs are incubated for balut and penoy making. Prior to incubation, the eggs are cleaned by wiping it with clean cloth. Care must be done in order to not break the eggs. The eggs will be incubated in secure incubator for 18 days. The eggs will be ready for marketing and pickup from dealers and balut business partners.
