A New Option for Gaming Laptop: AMD Newest Chip

Gaming laptops have a reputation of being expensive but powerful. These laptops are the kind gamers want, specially if gaming needs to be portable and mobile. While most gamers may have their gaming desktop PCs, a gaming laptop can be appealing due to its portability and compactness. When choosing among the list of gaming laptops, the buyer will need to consider the performance and specification of the gaming laptop. The price is also an important factor in buying a laptop- be it your very first gaming laptop or as a replacement gaming laptop. Unboxing and Experience

Being a first user of a gaming laptop, I can’t help but notice that the laptop has very sturdy black plastic-like outer case. The red illuminated keyboard also gives us the classic gaming laptop characteristic, which kinda makes me want to play my favorite PC game on this laptop immediately. The huge laptop charger can fully charge the laptop in about 1 hour. The battery drains slowly under Win10 power saver setting of about 4-5hours of use. The unit does not feel hot at touch, even on long hours of use, not surprising for a gaming laptop. Running some benchmark shows interesting figures about the processor cpu, memory and storage write/read speed. This post will be updated with actual game review upon community feedback on the laptop performance while gaming. As of now, setting up the laptop with software programs is very fast, and the upgrade is definitely worth it as the unit just cost Php40,000 from a local AMD Concept Store.

Performance Fix- Updated

Using the laptop out of the box without Windows Update, since we have no wired internet connection, has shown no noticeable effect on minimal computer usage (watching videos, opening Office Documents, Programming IDE Software, and Photoshop). However, the games played on the laptop is noticeably running smooth in medium to low settings. Upon checking, the onboard Vega graphics(integrated GPU) is the one utilized to render the games or GPU intensive applications. If you notice that the RX560 is not being used and stuck at 0% in the Task Manager, it would be worth the try to update the drivers (and in my case also the BIOS) by downloading the installer drivers and needed files from official Asus site. Fair warning, do not flash the BIOS if you do not intend to read instructions. Flickering screen is only encountered just once which is normal while installing the first updates, but as the rest of the software are completely installed, there is no flickering at all, and performance improved a lot. I did not encountered flickering monitor like what other users claimed to be experiencing a lot out-of-the-box, as I am very satisfied with the laptop specs and did not have other technical issues with it.

I specifically downloaded and installed the Radeon utility software, the BIOS update, and the AMD Adrenalin driver from my mobile data. Running now the games at somehow higher setting is smooth and not laggy since the game is configurable now to run in High Performance via the Radeon Display option which makes use of the dedicated GPU. This laptop in my opinion feels even faster and better than a Core i7 7th Gen powered Asus with Nvidia(not sure what model) that I used as company laptop. AMD finally made a very powerful and affordable laptop for  gamers.
